In general, alfalfa is a herbaceous perennial legume that is highly drought tolerant. Improved varieties provide increased disease resistance, winter hardiness, and yields. Vernal variety is the oldest one; it dates back to about 1945. It has no built in disease resistance and is untreated. The 8920MF is an improved variety over the Vernal. But the 8920MF has been improved upon by the Abacas variety of Alfafa. Both are untreated. Alfalfa provides high quality pasture for all classes of livestock. Alfalfa used in mixtures with grass reduces the risk of bloat and weed infestation. Alfalfa prefers a pH of 6.5 to 7.0. Seed in early spring or late summer/early fall. Initial harvest is approximately 60 days following emergence.
